The Importance of Work

In this article, we will explore the importance of finding purpose in Godly work, and how it can help us navigate the challenges of life, including the temptation to stray into destructive behaviors.

The Deeper Meaning of Work

Work is unavoidable! No matter how poor or how rich you are, if you are alive and breathing, work will be a part of your life.

We look at some wealthy people in our society and we think to ourselves, “they haven’t worked a day in their life” … I’m here to tell you, it’s impossible to be alive and not work. It is true that work looks different for everyone.

This might seem like a silly thought, but when is the last time you challenged yourself to avoid all work of any kind for as long as possible? There is a high chance that after a while, you will discover that trying not to work feels almost like a living hell. You will start to see all the things you need to do. Goals you had forgotten might begin to surface in your mind.

This directionless found in idleness might feel comforting temporarily but it quickly turns into something else. Of course, we all like downtime, that’s a given, but we should avoid the addiction to comfort and relaxation. Too much of anything is horrible for us, but especially comfort from doing nothing.

Time goes by fast and living a life void of purpose leads to a directionless existence. If you don't have an aim, how will you know when you have arrived?

In our modern world, many of the ultra-wealthy people continue to work long after they have no need to for the underlying reason of passion, purpose, and the simple fact that not working or more importantly lacking a meaningful purpose is extraordinarily bad for our souls and health. There are of course many other reasons for this, but for the sake of our article, we will use these reasons as context.

How does all of this apply to OneWay Restoration Ministries? Well, we teach recovery, but we also teach finding purpose in work and the routine of it. You see, giving up an addiction is hard, but it’s even harder if you have nothing else to fill that void. We teach Jesus Christ, but the Bible teaches we are to do His work on this earth.

Our work includes fishing for souls, fundraising on the streets, going to work events, taking care of ministry buildings, lawncare and landscaping, and many other responsibilities. We travel, we laugh together, we sweat together. All while learning together what it means to serve God and be free of addiction.

In the scriptures, we are told to take up our cross and follow Him.

When approached with the right perspective, work holds a deeper, more profound significance. Work can become a vehicle for fulfilling God’s purpose in our lives, a source of protection against temptation, and a means of serving others.

The Divine Purpose in Work

From the very beginning, work has been part of God's plan for humanity. In Genesis 2:15, we read, “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” Work was not a result of the fall but rather a divine purpose intended to bring order and stewardship to the world. This early example shows that work is meant to be more than just a task; it is a calling to steward God’s creation and contribute to His plan.

In Colossians 3:23-24, Paul advises, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” This passage highlights that our work is an act of worship. By dedicating our efforts to God, we align our daily tasks with a higher purpose, transforming ordinary work into a sacred endeavor.

Work as a Shield Against Temptation

In the face of life’s challenges, including the temptation to indulge in harmful behaviors such as drug use, work can serve as a powerful deterrent. Idle hands and unoccupied minds are often more susceptible to temptation. Proverbs 16:26 tells us, “The laborer's appetite works for him; his hunger drives him on.” Engaging in purposeful work keeps us occupied, redirecting our energy towards positive and constructive activities rather than succumbing to destructive habits.

Moreover, in 1 Thessalonians 5:14, Paul writes, “And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone.” Here, the emphasis is on avoiding idleness, which can lead to unrest and temptation. By staying engaged in meaningful work, we are less likely to fall into harmful patterns and more likely to find fulfillment and stability.

Fulfilling the Needs of Others and Ourselves

Work is not just about personal gain; it is also a means of serving others. In Ephesians 4:28, Paul instructs, “Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.” This verse underscores the idea that work should result in contributing to the well-being of others. By fulfilling our roles diligently, we are in a position to help those around us, creating a ripple effect of positive impact.

Additionally, work helps meet our own needs, both materially and emotionally. Proverbs 14:23 says, “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.” Engaging in purposeful labor provides us with financial stability, a sense of accomplishment, and personal growth. It helps us build self-esteem and confidence as we achieve our goals and overcome challenges.

Finding Joy and Fulfillment in Work

When work is approached with a Godly perspective, it becomes a source of joy and fulfillment. Ecclesiastes 3:22 reminds us, “So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work, because that is their lot.” Finding satisfaction in our daily tasks aligns with God’s intention for us to live a fulfilling life. By integrating our faith into our work, we can experience a deeper sense of purpose and satisfaction.

Furthermore, work allows us to reflect God's character through our actions. Colossians 3:17 states, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Our work can be an expression of our faith, demonstrating integrity, diligence, and compassion.

Conclusion

Finding purpose in Godly work transforms our approach to our daily tasks, turning them into acts of worship and service. It protects us from temptation, helps us meet the needs of others, and provides us with personal fulfillment. By dedicating our work to God and approaching it with a heart of gratitude and service, we align ourselves with His divine plan and contribute to the greater good. As we navigate the complexities of life, let us remember the words of Proverbs 3:6: “In all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Embrace your work as a calling, and let it be a reflection of God’s purpose in your life.
